Learn about Fort Riley’s nearly $4 Billion annual economic impact, the installation’s unique deployment and training capabilities, and the role the 1st Infantry Division plays in defending our nation.
Fort Riley occupies more than 100,000 acres between Manhattan and Junction City, Kansas, approximately 2 hours west of Kansas City via I-70. The installation is home to Soldiers and families of the U.S. Army 1st Infantry Division known as “The Big Red One” which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2017. There are approximately 15,000 active-duty service members assigned to Fort Riley with more than 18,000 family members, 29,000 veterans and retirees, and 5,600 civilian employees who live in the region and/or work at the post. Fort Riley has a full economic impact of nearly $4 billion annually. The 1st Infantry Division as well as National Guard and Reserve units from multiple states use the modern training facilities at Fort Riley to gain skills necessary to defend our nation.

Get the latest updates on NBAF construction, facility commissioning, and hiring the NBAF team. Also, learn about the NBAF mission and how it will help protect the nation’s agriculture, farmers and citizens against the threat and potential impact of serious animal diseases.
NBAF will be the first laboratory facility in the U.S. to provide BSL-4 laboratories capable of housing cattle and other large livestock. USDA’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) will conduct foreign animal disease research, training and diagnostics in the facility. NBAF will also feature a Biologics Development Module (BDM) for the pilot scale development of vaccines and other countermeasures, augmenting laboratory research and accelerating technology transfer to industry partners.
